Mission of Hope is the name of the ministry that is hosting our group the whole time we are in the DR. They will be our ministry partners that introduce us into the community and work along side us all over the Island!
Who is Mission of Hope?
This ministry started in Haiti in 1998, and expanded to Santiago, DR about 5 years ago. I am stationed at the third base in Jarabacoa, which was only built in January of this year! The mission statement for Mission of Hope is “Hope for every man, woman, and child”. They strive for outreach in all kinds of communities, for all kinds of people. Their goal is to transform nations one life at a time by focusing on nutrition, education, medical care, and church advancement. The most important of these being church advancement. Mission of Hope wants to equip communities to rely on each other and pursue the church so that the changes can become stable within each community and they can uplift and support one another for the long run. We partner with a new local church each week to go out and do ministry in that community and turn people towards that church that is closest to them.
What am I doing in partnership with Mission of Hope?
We have a wide variety of areas we will serve within the four focuses of MOH. Some examples are: free medical clinics, food services, school visits, and kids clubs. Our biggest job here is through SMT (Strategic ministry time). This is where we split into two teams of 5, plus a translator, and go out into neighborhoods to spread the gospel. We have an amazing opportunity to talk about Jesus and build relationship with people in the comfort of their homes. These interactions have lasted everywhere from ten minutes to three hours! It truly is so beautiful that MOH provides such an amazing opportunity to be involved in community. MOH hosts short-term groups year round that get to take part in many of these services, but each of those groups stays for about 1 week at a time. While we are here, we will get to build relationships with some groups that will filter through and our job is to serve them as well. This will look very different each week, but a lot of weeks we will be doing SMT leading people to whatever the short term group is providing. For example, we may be hosting a medical clinic in a local church with a short term team of doctors. While we will get opportunities to serve in the clinic, one of our jobs is to walk around the community and share with people that the clinic is happening while also speaking about Jesus. Each week will hold something new for my team and I, but I’m already seeing God moving and we are so blessed to be partnering with the people here at Mission of Hope
